Welcome to Digital Photography!

Welcome to Digital Photography - I'm your teacher, Mrs. Girot.  I hope you had an adventurous summer and are refreshed and ready to begin again!
After watching the videos posted in the week 1 lesson, I want you to start thinking deeply about these questions:
  1. Should photography capture life as it really is, or should it be used to create imaginative fantasy worlds?
  2. Camera Vs. Eye: Which is superior?  Why?
  3. What do cameras see that our eyes don't?
  4. Would you replace your eye with a camera?
If you haven't already, please watch photographer Trey Ratcliff's TED Talk: The Search for What is Out There

In regards to fantasy vs. reality, Trey Ratcliff said: "As opposed to kids, grown-ups have a very thick wall.  [Children] have a very thin veil.  They vacillate very easily and go back and forth between the two worlds. But to grown-ups, these are two distinct worlds, the real world and the fantasy world, and never the twain shall meet.  My work explores the tension between these two worlds, because between these two worlds is where the truth exists.  I tricked everyone a little bit today with the name of this idea: "What is out there?"  But of course, that's not the question at all is it?  The real question is, "What is in here? What is in you? Because you know that everything is inside of you.  Which leads us to the great secret, [which] is that it only appears that the entire universe is on the outside of us, but really, the whole universe is on the inside of us, and you literally get to create whatever you want to create."

Mr. Ratcliff also mentioned that when he was young, he knew that there were some greater purpose for him, but he just wasn't sure what it was.  Through blogging, he found himself, though!  That's why I'm asking you to create a blog!
What should you post in your blog?
  • Your photos- definitely photos!
  • Old photos, new photos - whatever you're inspired to create with!
  • Meaningful messages
  • Insights into the types of things you pontificate about
It's OK to share other people's photography to help to convey your message, but be sure to give credit to the photographer.
BLOG PORTFOLIO
As an artist, it's important to develop your portfolio.  Be sure to share your works of art in your blog and write about them.  What inspired you?  What was the process you used to achieve the final end product?  Where was the image taken?  What meaning does it possess?  Does it remind you of a poem, book, speech, etc.?  If so, include it! - but give credit to the original author, please :)
Be sure to submit your link to the Week 1 Assignment Dropbox so I can add it to the Student Blogs link list.  Once everyone's links are submitted, we'll assign small groups to follow with.

Here is a video I created demonstrating how to start your own blog - please watch in full:

Be sure to return to the Week 1 Assignment to read the full directions listed there.
